"The Lady Wore Black" is credited to DeGarmo and Tate. It was a song without lyrics when Tate was asked to write some, the same week as the 1982 Triad sessions, and it was his first lyric with the band. Its whistling intro was Tate waiting for his cue, and the take was kept. It runs 6:13 on the EP, 6:28 on the 2003 remaster and 4:51 as the single's radio edit, on the B-side of "Queen of the Reich" in September 1983. Rivadavia singled it out as showing more maturity, and in a 2011 court filing Tate said he and DeGarmo wrote what became the most popular song on the album.
