The Circle & the Square was produced by David Motion, with "Lean on Me" produced by Motion and Chris Hughes and engineered by Trigger. It was recorded at Eden, Air, Jam, Tapestry, Strongroom, Woolhall, Eel Pie and VM Studios and mixed at several others. Toulson-Clarke wrote the songs, three of them with Close, and "Saskatchewan" is by Buffy Sainte-Marie. Chris Wyles played drums, Simon Edwards bass, Ginny Clee sang, and a large group of guests played piano, marimba, accordion, trumpet, horn, harp and violins; the vocal group Box Vox included Anthony Head.
A 2008 Cherry Pop CD adds eight bonus tracks for 18 in all, 73:51.
