"For America" is the first track on The Circle & the Square, 3:46, written by Toulson-Clarke, and was released on Sire in October 1986 with "R n' A", by Close, on the other side. The 12-inch carries a Bazooka Mix of six minutes, mixed by Red Box and Phil Harding, with David Motion producing, and "Ain't Got No..I Got Life" from Hair. Wikipedia and Burning The Ground say WEA asked for something to suit American radio, and that the song satirizes the American media's style over content and alludes to US involvement in Grenada and Nicaragua; both repeat Wikipedia and no direct quote from the writer was found.

It reached number 10 in the United Kingdom, and number two in Belgium and Norway, six in Ireland and the Netherlands and 12 in Sweden, but was not a hit in the United States. Wikipedia says it outsold "Lean on Me" worldwide and reached number one in six countries, an uncited statement. It is not Jackson Browne's different song of the same name from 1986.
