It was Crowell's last album as sole producer. Cash sang and played guitar, with Benmont Tench on keyboards, Barry Beckett on piano and Hammond, Mark O'Connor on mandola and backing vocals from Crowell, Vince Gill, Patty Smyth and Steve Winwood. The singles "The Way We Make a Broken Heart", "Tennessee Flat Top Box", "If You Change Your Mind" and "Runaway Train" were all country number ones. The title comes from King's Record Shop in Louisville, Kentucky, owned by Gene King, Pee Wee King's younger brother; Hank DeVito photographed the shop and Cash separately and superimposed her in the doorway, and she was never there. It reached number six on the country albums chart and 138 on the Billboard 200 and was certified gold. AllMusic gave it four and a half stars, and Country Universe's Kevin John Coyne calls it the masterpiece that is King's Record Shop.
