John Hiatt wrote it, and Ry Cooder first recorded it in 1980 on Borderline. Hiatt and Cash recorded a duet in 1983, produced by Scott Mathews and Ron Nagle, which Geffen did not release; Asleep at the Wheel recorded it in 1985 as "This Is the Way We Make a Broken Heart" and Willy DeVille played it in Berlin in 2002. Cash's version is a solo re-recording, 3:55, produced by Crowell, released in June 1987 as the lead single from King's Record Shop with "707" on the B-side. It reached number one on the Hot Country Songs chart on October 10, 1987, for one week, her sixth country number one, and was the ninth song of the 1987 country year-end chart. No remarks from Cash about the song or a video were found.
