The band considered several producers, among them John Zorn and Al Jourgensen of Ministry, and chose Andy Wallace, who had mixed Arise. Wallace suggested Rockfield in South Wales for isolation. Max Cavalera said Wallace spent about three days in their rehearsal space in Phoenix making notes on every song. It was the first Sepultura album to include Paulo Jr., who had been in the band since 1984, and their only one released in North America by Epic. Kaiowas was recorded in the ruins of Chepstow Castle, with Kisser and Max on acoustic guitars and Igor and Paulo on percussion.
Max said the working title had been Propaganda until he combined the Misfits' Earth A.D. with the word chaos. Max asked Jello Biafra to contribute, and Biafra offered Biotech Is Godzilla; the growl on the record comes from Biafra's own demo cassette. Max said the band could easily have made Arise II, but that fresh material like Refuse/Resist and Territory was more exciting. It was their first record to use lower guitar tunings, with half the songs tuned down to D. The album reached 32 on the Billboard 200, their highest placing at the time, and sold more than two million copies. Kerrang! readers voted it best album at the first Kerrang! Awards.
