Duality was released on 4 May 2004 as the first single from Vol. 3. It opens with Taylor softly saying "I push my fingers into my," before Mick Thomson's riff arrives with Craig Jones's keyboards and Taylor finishes the line with the word eyes in a much more intense voice. The song is in drop B tuning. Thomson said in 2008 that Taylor had been leaning on explicit lyrics and wanted to try something different, and the song has no strong profanity. It reached number 15 on the UK Singles Chart, number five on the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and number six on Hot Modern Rock Tracks.

The video, directed by Mark Klasfeld and Tony Petrossian, was shot on 27 March 2004 in West Des Moines at a fan's house that was due for renovation. The band played inside surrounded by dozens of fans, and the house was destroyed in the process. Crahan said the band had asked its real fans to be in the video and that people came from all over. Roadrunner has listed it as the best music video in the label's history. The band played the song on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on 17 May 2004. Kerrang and Louder Sound placed it fifth and third in their 2020 lists of Slipknot's best songs.
