Psychosocial reached radio on 26 June 2008 and was released as a digital single on 7 July. The band played it live for the first time on 9 July 2008 at the White River Amphitheatre in Auburn, Washington. Jordison called it another creation of his and Gray's. Taylor said he was writing lyrics when the two played it to him, and that the chorus was already at the bottom of his page. Crahan said he had to ask Taylor what the title meant, and that Taylor would not tell him. Rolling Stone said the song slows the tempo to bludgeon with a steady, pounding groove and ends in a breakdown that would stump the best air-instrumentalists, and IGN's Jim Kaz praised its swaggering groove and anthemic chorus.

The video was shot on 30 June 2008 at Sound Farm in Jamaica, Iowa, and directed by Paul Brown, and it shows the band burning the purgatory masks seen in the teaser photographs for the album. The masks reportedly represent the band's ego. The song was nominated for Best Metal Performance at the 51st Grammy Awards, losing to Metallica's My Apocalypse, and the video was nominated for Best Rock Video at the MTV Video Music Awards. Kerrang and Louder Sound placed it ninth and fourth in their 2020 lists of Slipknot's best.
