Spit It Out was the main track on the demo that the band sent to labels and producers in 1998, and it helped put the band in front of Ross Robinson. When they came to make the album they tried to re-record it, producing a faster remix and a slower one, but felt they could not capture the magic of the original and used the demo recording on the finished album. It was released as the second and final single from Slipknot and reached number 28 on the UK Singles Chart. Mick Thomson and Shawn Crahan were reportedly keen on Surfacing as the single instead. AllMusic's Rick Anderson described the song as a speed rap metal song.
The video, directed by Thomas Mignone, cuts between a live performance and a homage to the 1980 film The Shining, with the members cast in its roles. MTV banned it for violent scenes, and a re-edited version was shown instead. Kerrang and Louder Sound both placed the song eighth in their 2020 lists of Slipknot's best, and a Loudwire comparison with tour statistics counts it among the four most played songs on stage. XXXTentacion and Ski Mask the Slump God sampled it in 2017.
