While You Were Out was the third full-length studio album from Soul Asylum and the third release the band put out in 1986. Chris Osgood produced it. The Wildhearts later covered The Judge, and Automatic 7 covered Closer to the Stars.

Robert Christgau noted that the most striking track was once again a slow country-folk rip. The New York Times said the band played explosive speed-rock in jubilant major keys, and the Los Angeles Daily News said it had moved beyond its punk roots without losing its raw power.
