Murphy alone wrote Cartoon, and he said he wrote it very quickly after a breakup, and that it answered critics who called the band a junior Husker Du. The band's manager, Dave Ayers, gave it the title because the song has no conventional chorus. The word cartoon appears in the lyric just once.
Murphy and Pirner sing together in rough harmony and then in counterpoint, and a long melodic guitar solo from Murphy runs through the song. Medialoper said the single did not chart, while a blog review heard interlocking, chiming guitars and called it the ideal Soul Asylum anthem. The video was the lead video for the album and was shown on MTV's 120 Minutes. A live version from October 1990 is on the 2007 box set Welcome to the Minority. The upload in the hypersongs web is the official video.
