Released by Dedicated Records on cassette, CD and double vinyl, with initial copies including a free 7-inch, it was recorded by the first line-up of the band and mixed by Pierce in London in January 1992. The vinyl edition groups the songs into a red section (tracks 1 to 3), a green section (4 to 7), a blue section (8 and 9) and a black section (10 to 12). Pierce reported that the album cost 3,800 pounds to produce. "Run" is credited to Pierce and J. J. Cale and contains elements of Cale's "Call Me the Breeze" and the Velvet Underground's "Run Run Run".
Pitchfork's Ben Cardew wrote in 2021 that "Shine A Light" draws on the gospel tradition and that "Symphony Space" is a drifting ambient number. Record Collector's Terry Staunton said the songs work best heard in a single sitting. The album reached number 27 on the UK chart in 1992. For the 2021 reissue it reached number 7 in Scotland and number 5 on the UK Independent chart. It is listed in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, and NME placed it second on a 2017 list of the ten best shoegaze albums.
