Pure Phase

Recorded at Moles Studio in Bath with contributions from the Balanescu Quartet, the album was first sold on CD in a glow-in-the-dark case. The band was named Spiritualized Electric Mainline on the cover. Pierce said the tracks were mixed twice and that, unable to pick one, he kept both. Producing the effect meant cutting the tapes into usable sections and re-locking them on a bass drum every eight or ten bars. John Coxon's remark that if he liked both mixes he should just do that started the idea. Pierce was also taking in the minimalism of Steve Reich, John Adams and Michael Nyman at the time, and invited the Balanescu Quartet to play.

A limited release called Pure Phase Tones For DJs held 16 versions of the title track, playable at 33 and 45 rpm, and the tone still plays before the band goes on stage. The Quietus said it met middling reviews on release. Record Collector's Terry Staunton wrote in 2021 that it is much more accessible than head music, and Louder Than War's Wayne Carey called it a drone masterpiece.
