It took Pierce four years to write, perform, produce and release. Recorded and produced at Abbey Road and AIR Studios, it used 115 session musicians, including an orchestra and the London Community Gospel Choir. Singles were "Stop Your Crying" (10 September 2001), "Out of Sight" (26 November 2001) and "Do It All Over Again" (11 February 2002). The closing track revisits "Lord Can You Hear Me", a Spacemen 3 song.
The album reached number three on the UK chart, the band's highest position there. Dave Simpson of The Guardian wrote in 2001 that Pierce's achievement was to rehabilitate rock grandiosity. Pitchfork found the sound only slightly more lush and refined than the 1997 album. NME said much of it was recorded live at Abbey Road with up to 100 musicians.
