Open was recorded at Ridge Farm in August 1979 and released by Virgin on 12 October. Hillage produced it, with Miquette Giraudy on synthesizer, voice and vocoder, Paul Francis on bass and Andy Anderson on drums, percussion and gong. His band now included a young second guitarist called Dave Stewart, who was not his old Uriel and Khan bandmate and keyboard player of the same name. That Dave Stewart does appear, though, with a solo on The Fire Inside. Nick Mason is credited as producer on one track. The album reached seventy-one in Britain.
The 1990 CD put the four studio tracks from Live Herald at the front and revised the running order. The 2007 remaster keeps that order and adds two bonus tracks, one of them an early version of Don't Dither Do It from the Fish Rising sessions.
