Hometown Unicorn was the band's debut single on Creation, released on 26 February 1996. It reached number 47 on the UK Singles Chart and was NME's single of the week. Gorwel Owen and the band produced it. The sleeve carries a Welsh quotation, Bydded goleuni!, meaning Let there be light, and every later single up to Demons in 1997 followed the practice.
Tim Wheeler of Ash said the song is about a French teenager, Franck Fontaine, who disappeared in 1979 and turned up a week later claiming he had been abducted by aliens. A photograph of Fontaine appears on the CD single and on the Fuzzy Logic sleeve. Pitchfork's Marc Hogan called it a more psychedelic take on Blur's This Is a Low. Garry Mulholland's book This Is Uncool lists it among the 500 greatest singles since punk and disco.
