Stepney played electric piano and piano, conducted and arranged, and Callier played guitar. The band included Louis Satterfield on bass, Morris Jennings and Donald Simmons on drums, Phil Upchurch on guitar and Donald Myrick on alto sax and flute, with strings, horns, a harp and backing vocals by Vivian Harrell, Kitty Haywood and Shirley Wahls. According to a Wax Poetics piece, Callier was called to the Chess studios and found some 25 musicians in Studio A, and hearing the strings through headphones felt like being transported to another realm. AllMusic's Ryan Randall Goble called it a musical kaleidoscope and gave it five stars. Craig Charles ranked it number 22 in his top 40 funk albums on BBC 6 Music.
