The Affectionate Punch was released by Fiction on August 1, 1980 and produced by Mike Hedges and Chris Parry at Morgan Studios in London; a 1982 remix added recordings from Basing Street and Odyssey Studios. MacKenzie sings and Rankine plays guitar, bass and keyboards, with Nigel Glockler on drums and Robert Smith singing backing vocals on two tracks. NME's Paul Morley called it a kind of masterpiece, and BBC Music's Chris Jones wrote that few bands today would dare to be so audacious. Ian Rankin took the title of his 2015 novel Even Dogs in the Wild from one of its tracks.
