Released on 30 September 1996 as the lead single from Dig Your Own Hole, with Noel Gallagher of Oasis on vocals and as co-writer with Rowlands and Simons. They went to Orinoco Studios at the end of February 1996 to record it. Simons said they sent Gallagher a tape of a track they called Mark One, which they thought might appeal because of its Beatley feel, and that the song itself was a day in the studio with him and then some mixing. Gallagher left early to watch Manchester City play a Third Division match. Jon Dee engineered and Mike Marsh mastered.
It sold 99,000 copies in its first week and entered the UK chart at number one. Chris Evans played it on his BBC Radio 1 breakfast show and took it off, saying he did not think it a very suitable record for that time of the morning. Rowlands told NME it takes a lot of hard work to get a record featuring Noel Gallagher pulled from daytime Radio 1. The video, directed by Nic Goffey and Dominic Hawley, was shot in the abandoned Crystal Palace Subway station in London and follows a bewildered young woman through a rave. Spin's Eric Weisbard reported that MTV cited it as the inspiration for a format shift away from alternative rock and toward electronica.
Caroline Sullivan of The Guardian gave it five out of five and named it single of the week. Taylor Parkes of Melody Maker likened it to the beat from the Beatles' Tomorrow Never Knows cranked up. Pitchfork ranked it number 43 on its list of the top 200 tracks of the 1990s, and in 2022 Rolling Stone placed it at number 82 on its list of the 200 greatest dance songs of all time. A live version recorded at the Lowlands Festival in the Netherlands on 24 August 1997 is on the B-side of The Private Psychedelic Reel. It was played in 87 of the 357 concerts that have a logged setlist.
