"Sorrow" is track two on High Violet, 3:25, with Berninger writing or co-writing all of that record's songs; song-specific credits were not confirmed. Berninger told The Quietus it is a celebration of sorrow and a wallowing song, and Songfacts collects his other remarks, from secondary sources, describing it as about a person's relationship with their own sadness.
On May 5, 2013 at MoMA PS1 in Long Island City, with the Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson, the band played it continuously from midday to six in the evening, in a piece called A Lot of Sorrow. Time Out's Paul Laster counts 105 plays, filmed with five cameras, and Songfacts, citing The Independent, has Berninger saying 108 and that they would not do it again. The video was shown at Luhring Augustine in Bushwick from September 11 to December 21, 2014, and 4AD issued a vinyl box set in June 2015. Setlist.fm counts 345 ordinary performances, and the band played it at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in May 2010.
