Jailbreak was produced by John Alcock at Ramport Studios, with Will Reid Dick engineering. Lynott played bass and acoustic guitar and sang, Gorham and Robertson played guitars, and Downey drums and percussion. The singles were "The Boys Are Back in Town" with "Emerald" on the other side (April 17, 1976) and "Jailbreak" with "Running Back" (July 30, 1976). It reached number 10 in the United Kingdom, 18 in the United States and five in Canada. AllMusic's Erlewine called it a truly exceptional album, and Robert Christgau called Lynott's lyrics boring.
