The opening song of Happy Sad's second side is an ode and apology to his former wife, Mary Guibert, and their son Jeff. It is the second song he wrote about them, after I Never Asked to Be Your Mountain, and its tone is more apologetic. A line asks, does he ever ask about me. More than five years passed before Buckley met his son again, and by the time Buckley died Jeff had met him only once, for a week.
The live album Dream Letter: Live in London 1968 took its name from the song, and the concert pairs it with Happy Time in a 9:25 medley.
