Rush wrote "No Regrets" alone, and it closes The Circle Game (Elektra, April 1968), 3:50, produced by Arthur Gorson. It was a UK single in early 1968 with "Shadow Dream Song" on the other side, reaching number 57 on the BMRB Breakers chart. He re-recorded it in 1974 for Ladies Love Outlaws, orchestrated, at 5:40 as a single, with Mark Spector producing, Carly Simon on backing vocals and Rupert Holmes arranging the strings; that single came out in January 1975. Which recording our upload is, 1968, 1974 or live, is unconfirmed. He told Rock the Joint in 2026 that he believes it was only the third song he ever wrote.
The Walker Brothers' version, produced by Scott Walker and Geoff Calver and released on GTO on November 14, 1975, reached number seven in the United Kingdom in February 1976, their comeback single and the title track of their album. Midge Ure took it to number nine in 1982 as his debut solo single. SecondHandSongs lists about 28 covers, including George Hamilton IV, Waylon Jennings, Olivia Newton-John, Harry Belafonte, Shirley Bassey, Emmylou Harris and Luna. Rush has said royalties from the Walker Brothers' cover helped put his two children through college.
A 1968 promotional film, shot on the outskirts of London while he toured there, is described on his site as allegedly one of the first music videos ever produced. Setlist.fm counts 27 performances, and it closed the main set of the Symphony Hall show on December 28, 2012.
