"River Song" was written by Rush and recorded in November 1998 as a new song closing the 1999 compilation, with vocals by Shawn Colvin and Marc Cohn. It reappears as the third track on What I Know (Appleseed, 2009), produced by Jim Rooney, with Robin Batteau on violin; no source says whether that is a new take or the 1998 recording. Our upload is titled "River Song (Album Version)".

Rush told the Rocky Mountain News in 2005 that it is about having your life turned upside down and waiting for it to settle down; he wrote it during his 15 years in Wyoming, coming off a divorce, and only later understood what it was about. His site gives the tuning as open D (D A D F# A D) with a capo at the third fret, sounding in F, and he teaches it on the DVD How I Play (Some of) My Favorite Songs (Homespun, 2006). Setlist.fm counts 7 performances. No covers or samples were found.
