Townes told Aretha Sills in 1994 that he woke from a dream telling him to go to Ireland and have Philip Donnelly, who had played on Flyin' Shoes, produce his next record, and found Donnelly's number written on a piece of paper. Pearse Gilmore recorded it at Xeric Studios in Limerick with Jeanene Van Zandt as executive producer, and Donovan plays harmonica. Declan Masterson's uilleann pipes and Máirtín O'Connor's accordion color some of the songs.

It has fourteen new compositions, among them lullabies to his younger children, Hey Willy Boy and Katie Belle Blue. Jeanene found the lyrics of A Song For on a notepad and told him it was beautiful, and he answered that it was a suicide note. Guy Clark remembered Townes saying he had written Marie that morning, and playing it that night at McCabe's Guitar Shop in Santa Monica. AllMusic said the album showed the muse was still with him.
