"Feathered Indians" is track two on Purgatory, 3:45, and Childers played it in bars for years before the album. American Songwriter, which calls it his breakout track, says it is about marks left on a lover's inner thigh by his belt buckle depicting a Native American chief; she is devout and he is drunk, so clothes stay on. Setlist.fm counts 134 performances. Our upload is titled Purgatory.

In 2020, around Long Violent History, he removed it from his sets, Grammy.com says. In a GQ interview before Snipe Hunter, reported by Whiskey Riff on July 24, 2025, he said of the word Indian that it ain't for him to be using, it's not his, and that we must leave behind that which causes harm to others, even if we never meant harm to begin with. Whiskey Riff says he and Senora May donate the song's royalties to Indigenous communities through the Hickman Holler Appalachian Relief Fund; the GQ article itself was not read. No covers or samples were found.
