Zawinul played keyboards, synthesizers, vocals, melodica, guitar and tabla, Shorter soprano and tenor saxophones, Pastorius fretless bass, mandocello, steel drums, drums on "Teen Town" and vocals on "Birdland", Alex Acuna drums and congas and Manolo Badrena percussion. An expanded edition adds live versions of "Black Market", "Teen Town" and "Birdland". Rolling Stone's Dan Oppenheimer wrote in June 1977 that the new bassist had been instrumental in developing their busier, talkative style, and AllMusic's Richard Ginell that it came just as the jazz-rock movement began to run out of steam. It was released on CD in 1984, remastered in 1992 and on SACD in 2002.
