Nick Gold and Touré produced The Source, with Philippe Bertrand and John Hadden recording it. Taj Mahal plays acoustic guitar on Roucky and Mahini Me, Nitin Sawhney plays tabla on Inchana Massina, and Afel Bocoum sings, and Hamma Sankaré and Oumar Touré provide the chorus. The album peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard World Albums chart.

The Los Angeles Times singled out the solo instrumental Cinquante Six, which it likened to a meeting of Leo Kottke and the Gipsy Kings. Trouser Press found it most notable for challenging the singer to move beyond blues, on Hawa Dolo, and to play more intricate single-note lines, on Roucky. Cinquante Six, Goye Kur and Hawa Dolo were used in Olivier Assayas's film Fin août, début septembre (1998).
