Voyageur collects nine tracks recorded between 1991 and 2004 at jam sessions and concert rehearsals. Nick Gold and Touré are credited as producers and Vieux Farka Touré as co-producer. Three songs are duets with Oumou Sangaré, which Gold dated to around 1994, saying he was terrible with dates. Vieux Farka Touré added overdubs in Bamako, and Kombo Galia comes from the Savane sessions.
Pitchfork's Megan Iacobini de Fazio noted that Safari means journey in Swahili, that Sambadio is a Fula song in honor of farmers, and that Sadjona is a traditional Wassoulou song for hunters. Pee Wee Ellis arranged horns on the electric version of Sambadio, where Steve Williamson plays saxophone.
