Recorded in May 1969 at the Coltrane home studios and released later that year, first on John Coltrane Records, which was absorbed by Impulse!. Coltrane plays harp on the first three tracks and piano on the last three, with Ron Carter on bass and Rashied Ali on drums. In her liner notes she defines turiya as a state of consciousness, the high state of Nirvana and the goal of human life, and says that IHS means I Have Suffered.
AllMusic gave it four stars and praised the majestically meditative harp. The author Max Brzezinski singled out Turiya for its mesmeric effects. Impulse! reissued it in 2011 alongside World Galaxy.
