Her first commercial album in 26 years was produced by her son Ravi Coltrane, who plays saxophone, as does her third son Oran. She made it at their urging and said she was not starting a second career. Ravi said he wanted a document he could always share with his own children. It was recorded at five locations between April 2000 and June 2004. Coltrane plays piano or Wurlitzer organ, with Charlie Haden and James Genus on bass and Jack DeJohnette and Jeff "Tain" Watts on drums.

Of the eleven tracks, two are by John Coltrane, Crescent and Leo, and four are traditional: Sita Ram, Walk with Me, This Train and Satya Sai Isha. The rest are her own, among them a new version of Blue Nile. Ashley Kahn writes that the title plays on the Coltrane name, and she explained trance as meaning to transcend. The Observer's Ekow Eshun called it less a comeback than a continuation, and AllMusic's Thom Jurek called it a major entry in her catalog.
