Devotion

Devotion was written in the first half of 2007 and recorded from July that year at Lord Baltimore with Rob Girardi. Legrand said an old Yamaha keyboard became the main instrument of the band. Heart of Chambers was written in a practice space near I-83 in Baltimore after neighbors complained about the noise at Scally's house, and the band recorded a cover of Daniel Johnston's Some Things Last a Long Time. The title came from a lyric in All the Years. Legrand, looking back, said they called it Devotion for a reason and described two dreamers chasing something together in a dreamworld. On the cover, taken by Natasha Tylea at Legrand's apartment, the two sit across a table with lit candles and a white cake with the title in blue icing.

Videos followed for You Came to Me (directed by Skyzz Cyzyk), Heart of Chambers (directed by Legrand's brother Alistair) and Gila (directed by Jon Irone), and the band toured in 2008 with Papercuts, whose Jason Quever played live drums. The record entered the Billboard 200 at 195 with roughly 3,000 copies in its first week and had sold 49,000 in the United States by April 2012. Brian Howe of Pitchfork wrote that the band had simply cleaned up their act. Pitchfork placed it 46th in its albums of 2008, and Rolling Stone ranked it 36th in its list of the 40 greatest stoner albums.
