Once Twice Melody

Beach House began recording Once Twice Melody in 2018 at Apple Orchard in Baltimore, with later sessions at Pachyderm, United and Village until July 2021. Scally taught himself to be an audio engineer and recorded Legrand's vocals over five months that ended in late 2021. David Campbell arranged the live strings, the first time the band used a live string ensemble, and the album was the first produced entirely by Beach House. Four engineers mixed it, among them Alan Moulder, Caesar Edmunds and Dave Fridmann, who mixed Finale. Michael Scally plays a guitar solo on one song, and James Barone plays live drums.

The 18 songs came out in four chapters: Pink Funeral on 10 November 2021, New Romance on 8 December, Masquerade on 19 January 2022, and the last, Modern Love Stories, with the full album on 18 February. Hurts to Love appeared as a surprise single on Valentine's Day. Scally said they split the songs by the energy of the music and the lyrics, and Legrand said there is no right way to listen. The album debuted at twelve on the Billboard 200 with 24,000 units and topped Top Album Sales. Philip Sherburne of Pitchfork wrote that you do not listen to it, you dissolve into it, and Stevie Chick of Mojo called it the band's grandest vision yet. Its tour began in Pittsburgh on 18 February 2022 and ended in Washington DC on 24 July.
