Lazy Line Painter Jane was the band's second EP, released in July 1997 on Jeepster, and it reached 41 on the UK singles chart. The title track features the guest singer Monica Queen. It was recorded in the band's usual rehearsal space, a rented hall at Hyndland Parish Church in Glasgow, the church where Murdoch lived. The other tracks include A Century of Elvis, on which Stuart David reads a story he wrote over music by the band. All four tracks were later collected on the compilation Push Barman to Open Old Wounds.

PopMatters said there is really nothing like the song's sinister tone anywhere else in the band's catalogue, and credited its throbbing bass with proving they could be a locked-in rock band. A live version recorded in Glasgow appeared on the DVD single for Funny Little Frog in 2006.
