Legal Man was released in May 2000, on 16 May in the United States and six days later in the UK. It was the band's first stand-alone single, meaning it came from no album. It was recorded at CaVa Studios in Glasgow. Isobel Campbell, Sarah Martin and Rozanne Suarez, credited as the Maisonettes, sing on it, and Jonny Quinn of Snow Patrol plays congas. The cover shows Stevie Jackson, Campbell, Adrienne Payne and Suarez, and Campbell directed the video.
It reached 15 in the UK, 10 in Norway, 46 in Sweden and 50 in Ireland, and 4 on the Canadian singles chart compiled by Nielsen SoundScan. It is the band's best-selling single in the United States, and it gave them their first appearance on Top of the Pops. The B-sides were Judy Is a Dick Slap, the first instrumental the band released, and Winter Wooskie, the last song on which Stuart David sang lead before leaving the band in 2000. All three tracks were later collected on Push Barman to Open Old Wounds.
