Björk wrote and produced it. A first version, Embrace Fortress, was written with Bogdan Raczynski in New York during the Vespertine sessions and came out on Rephlex vinyl. The Medúlla version has Tanya Tagaq's throat singing and Rahzel's beatbox, recorded in a single take, and fruit-machine noises from Matmos.
It reached number five in Spain, twenty-six in the UK and in Italy, and number three on the UK independent chart. Dawn Shadforth's video was shot at Hjörleifshöfði and features an Alexander McQueen bell dress, which sold for 44,000 pounds in 2016.
Live and covers
She first played it on the 2001 Vespertine tour and sang it on Friday Night with Jonathan Ross on 8 October 2004. It went on to the Volta tour, and the Biophilia tour used a bell choir version. Bon Iver covered it in 2011 and Kurt Elling in 2015.
