Buena Vista Social Club

The danzón that gave the project its name, built around Rubén González's piano.

The title track is a danzón that spotlights the piano of Rubén González. It was recorded after Ry Cooder heard González improvising around the theme before a day's session. González then told him the history of the Havana social club and said the piece was the club's mascot tune. Nick Gold took its title as the name for the whole project. Cooder said it felt like a club, so they called it that.

In the Wenders film the musicians go looking for the club, and Cooder said that nobody could agree where it had stood. It ran 4:50 on the album and 5:59 at Carnegie Hall on 1 July 1998.
