El cuarto de Tula had long been a favorite of Eliades Ochoa's Cuarteto Patria. The Buena Vista recording is an extended descarga, a Cuban jam, in which Ibrahim Ferrer and Manuel "Puntillita" Licea join Ochoa to improvise lyrics laced with sexual innuendo in the Santiago tradition. Barbarito Torres plays a laúd solo, and the timbales were played by Julienne Oviedo Sánchez, who was thirteen. The song was used in the 2001 film Training Day.

It runs 7:27 on the album and 8:00 at Carnegie Hall on 1 July 1998, and it is one of the songs in the Wenders film.
