The title parodies Jimi Hendrix's Electric Ladyland. The original title was to be Oklahoma!, but Capitol, fearing lawsuits, made the band change it. Basic recordings were made at Leary's house in Austin, at Arlyn Studios in Austin and at Bearsville Studios in Woodstock, New York, with mixing and mastering at Ocean Way in Los Angeles. The cover, an ear impaled by a pencil, was drawn by Paul Mavrides. A clean version replaced it with a photograph of a prairie dog.
The album reached 31 on the Billboard 200 and was certified gold by the RIAA on 20 August 1996. The Lord Is a Monkey appeared in two 1996 films, Beavis and Butt-head Do America and Black Sheep, and the band played Ulcer Breakout on The Larry Sanders Show.
