Pepper was released on 11 April 1996 from Electriclarryland. It reached number one on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart and ended the year as the top-ranked song on that listing. It also reached number 26 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart, 15 in Australia, 32 in New Zealand and number two on Canada's RPM Alternative 30, and it ranked number four in Triple J's Hottest 100 of 1996.

The song opens with the chorus riff slowed to half speed and moves between spoken verses and sung choruses. The verses list ten characters, some of whom die and some of whom escape a brush with death. The bridge is played in reverse, using the first and last lines of the chorus. Coffey told the Hartford Courant in 1996 that Massive Attack, Tricky and Soul II Soul influenced the sound. The video, directed by Gavin Bowden, shows the band arrested in a Texas hotel for kidnapping, with Erik Estrada as the rescued victim. On 2 September 2010 Hesta Prynn and Slipknot's Shawn Crahan released a cover as a 7-inch single.
