After the shelved 1968 sessions that later became Delay 1968, Monster Movie was Can's more commercial attempt. It is credited to The Can, a name Malcolm Mooney suggested and the band adopted by vote, and some copies carried the subtitle "Made in a castle with better equipment". Czukay mastered it at the WDR Studio for Electronic Music in Cologne. Yoo Doo Right was edited down from six hours of improvisation, and the lyrics of Mary, Mary So Contrary borrow from the nursery rhyme.
The first pressing of 500 copies went out through head shops and underground shops, sold out, and led label head Karlheinz Freynik to sign a deal with Liberty and United Artists. Liberty issued the album in May 1970 with an updated cover, and the cover image on the album retraces Jack Kirby's Galactus from Marvel's Thor. Richard Williams of Melody Maker heard a Velvet Underground influence on the shorter tracks and praised the band's electronics. Pitchfork's Dominique Leone called it Can's most rock-oriented album and heard Father Cannot Yell as a forerunner of minimalist rock. It was the last album on which Mooney sang all the vocals until Rite Time.
