Rosko Gee and Rebop Kwaku Baah, both formerly of Traffic, joined for this record, and Czukay gave up the bass for a wave receiver and special sounds. Czukay had met Gee in 1975 when Gee was in Jim Capaldi's backing band on the same episode of The Old Grey Whistle Test as Can. Karoli had travelled in Africa after Flow Motion, and in 1997 said a good highlife band makes you feel like a carrot thrown into a boiling soup, an influence he thought inevitable on this album. Mixed at Delta Acoustic Studio near Hamburg, it was converted by the engineer Manfred Schunke to artificial head stereo for a three-dimensional effect. Don't Say No reuses the melody of Moonshake.
The tour began in Canterbury on 1 March 1977 and took in Keele, Aston, Redcar, Bournemouth, Nottingham and two nights at the Sound Circus in London, then German dates in late April, all without Baah. They proved to be Can's last run of concerts. Melody Maker praised the album's assurance, while AllMusic's Stewart Mason found a tired, dispirited feel but admired Gee's playing and Don't Say No.
