Clearest Blue

The song that came to define how Every Open Eye sounds, planned as two chords and a laid-back mood.

The third single from Every Open Eye, released on 10 September 2015, gave the album its title through a lyric. Doherty and Cook said on the podcast Song Exploder that they planned a laid-back song with just two chords, then broke their own rules. Doherty added nonsense vocals to set the cadences, and Mayberry wrote lyrics to replace them. It was the seventeenth track recorded, and Doherty called it big and happy and sad and a banger. He described its climax as a moment of rest rather than punching the air. NME called it the album's most heart-bursting moment, and the Guardian's Nicholson said it updates Depeche Mode's Just Can't Get Enough for the BBC Radio 1 A-list.

It opened Chvrches' first show since the Bones tour, at Ottawa Bluesfest on 15 July 2015, and they played it at the Pitchfork Music Festival and on The Late Late Show with James Corden. The video came out on 19 February 2016. The song appears in Forza Horizon 3, in the first season of The Politician and in Heartstopper.
