Leave a Trace

Released on 17 July 2015 with the announcement of the title, date, cover and tracklist for Every Open Eye, it was played live for the first time at Ottawa Bluesfest on 15 July 2015, alongside Clearest Blue and Make Them Gold. Mayberry called it the middle finger mic-drop, about the point where you decide there is no use having the conversation, and said that writing about it felt like doing something constructive. Laura Snapes of Pitchfork wrote that Mayberry had mastered a more effective move than wounds and weaponry, the coolest of indifference. Rolling Stone placed it at number 24 on its songs of 2015, and Billboard at number 14.

The video was released on 17 August 2015 and, as Rebecca Nicholson of the Guardian noted, put the singer in front. Chvrches performed the song at The Game Awards on 3 December 2015.
