Moore and Blegvad's song was first recorded as War (Is Energy Enslaved) in May 1974, with session musicians, for a single Virgin had asked to be radio friendly. Virgin rejected it, saying the song suited an album better, and the writers began to write more serious material. It was recorded again with Henry Cow for Desperate Straights but held back, and appeared on In Praise of Learning in 1975. It was the only real Slapp Happy contribution to that album apart from Krause's singing.
Critics disagreed. An AllMusic reviewer wrote that it had enormous proportion and power, Ian MacDonald of the NME described it as exploding musique concrète, and Dave Laing found it musically limp. Moore later rearranged it for his 1979 solo album Flying Doesn't Help, and The Fall covered it on Middle Class Revolt in 1994.
