Guests on the record include Bootsy Collins, Q-Tip, Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker. The CD added two tracks, Deee-Lite Theme and Build the Bridge, that were not on the LP. E.S.P. contains a sample of Bela Lugosi from the 1934 film The Black Cat.

In Britain the album peaked at number 14 in September 1990. It entered the Billboard 200 at number 180 the week of 15 September and climbed to number 20 the week of 24 November. It was certified Gold by the RIAA in December 1990 and spent 41 weeks on the chart, leaving it in June 1991. It remains the group's most successful album, ahead of Infinity Within and Dewdrops in the Garden on peak position and sales.

Reception

Spin's Steven Daly called it the debut album of the year. Greg Sandow of Entertainment Weekly wrote that the group made dance music that was unpredictable and steadily delirious. NME's Helen Mead called it one of the most varied and inspirational club crossover records ever. Rolling Stone's Arion Berger was cooler, finding the beats formulaic and the vocals not quite powerful. Christgau named Good Beat its only choice cut, and the Los Angeles Times gave it two and a half stars on 14 October 1990. AllMusic's Ned Raggett wrote that Kier had the personality to carry something on her own.

Slant's Ed Gonzalez, reviewing it in 2004, described a musical gumbo made by a group of club kids, and called What Is Love? arguably the group's single greatest moment. Slant also included the album in its 2003 list of 50 essential pop albums.
