The organ riff derives from Bombay Calling by It's a Beautiful Day, a 1969 song. Gillan wrote the lyrics with the Cold War as the theme, saying everyone was aware of the nuclear threat. The studio version was recorded at IBC in November 1969.
The band first recorded it live at the Concerto performance in September 1969, a tape issued in 1977 on Powerhouse. It was a staple of their concerts from 1970 to 1973 and again after the 1984 reunion, and the Made in Japan version runs 12:25. The band last played it in March 2002 in Kharkiv, and it is said to have become an anthem for anti-Communist groups in Eastern Europe.
