Joe South wrote the song for Billy Joe Royal, who recorded it in Nashville on 12 July 1967. Blackmore heard the original in Hamburg, and the Mark I line-up of Blackmore, Evans, Simper, Paice and Lord recorded it in two takes for Shades of Deep Purple. It reached number four on the US Hot 100 in September 1968 and number two in Canada, and the band performed it on Playboy After Dark.

The Mark II line-up re-recorded it in 1988 for Nobody's Perfect, where it reached number 62 in Britain. The band also played it at the 2016 Rock Hall induction. It was also played at the Concerto for Group and Orchestra concert in 1969, and that performance was added to a 2002 reissue.
