Woman from Tokyo was the first track recorded for Who Do We Think We Are, in Rome in July 1972. The song is about touring Japan for the first time, and its lyrics include the line Fly into the Rising Sun. The UK lyric sheet credits it to all five band members.
The album version has a long dreamy break in the middle that the single omits. The single reached number six in the Netherlands, 16 in Germany, 23 in Belgium and 60 in the United States. Cash Box called it a super driving rocker. Ultimate Classic Rock ranked it third in a list of Roger Glover's best songs.
The band hardly played it live in the 1970s but made it a staple from the 1984 reunion on. A version with an orchestra is on the 2011 DVD Deep Purple with Orchestra, Live in Montreux.
