Love and Death appeared first on Conflict in 1980, with Uhuru Yenzu, and again on the 2010 Strut album Love and Death, recorded in Berlin with Afrobeat Academy. The two uploads on hypersongs are both titled Love and Death and the sources do not say which is which. Taylor wrote it, as he wrote everything on Conflict. Strut's track notes, a label text and not Taylor's own words about the song, say he wrote it about his first wife, who left him, and the hardships of a life in music. In an Afropop interview he said he tried to write the song in English. Rhythm Passport calls its harmonic intro iconic and a masterclass in brass, and says it is something of a jazz standard for students of the genre; a 2019 academic article describes it as built on a two-chord progression, a claim seen here only in a search result.
Setlist.fm counts four performances, his most played song in its database. Music in Africa lists it among the songs others have sampled, without saying which acts used which track.
